Our Redress Alumni are driving fashion sustainability in myriad ways. See what they’ve been working on lately!
Redress Designer Residency: Tulika Ranjan
Our Designer Residency programme supports a selection of Redress Alumni designers through collaborative projects that develop their skills and knowledge, whilst showcasing solutions for waste and providing valuable cross-cultural exposure.
For the second stage of this project, Tulika Ranjan is showcasing ‘WakamonoT: Memories We Carry’, an exhibition of art pieces fashioned from discarded garments from Redress’ Takeback Programme in Hong Kong. Inspired by the ancient folk craft of oriental knotting and the Japanese concept of ‘wakamono’ that embodies the spirit of youth, the art pieces serve as a gentle invitation to reflect upon our formative journeys. The exhibition is showcasing at Mondrian Hong Kong’s art space, The Corner Shop, from 26 October–24 November 2024.
Lola Clavel designs costumes for Gen Last musical
Alum, Lola Clavel has designed the costumes for Gen Last, an upcoming musical by the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation. Directed by Lindsey McAlister OBE JP, the performance tells the story of empowerment and optimism in the face of climate change in a futuristic dystopian world.
Lola partnered with Redress to create the costumes made from garments collected through our Takeback Programme, aligning with the show topic and creating the costumes in an eco-responsible manner.
Her team collected and sorted 60kg of unwanted clothes, cleaned them, reworked, and upcycled each item to transform them into stage costumes. Book tickets now here.
Alumni Exhibition in Shenzhen
A selection of Redress 2024 Finalists and Alumni garments demonstrating the transformational potential of waste materials are exhibiting at the Futian Gallery from 8 November 2024 to 28 February 2025. The exhibition is titled ‘Sustainable Renaissance – Sustainable Fashion & Art Project’.
In a launch event taking place on 25 October during Shenzhen Fashion Week, Redress’ founder, Christina Dean shared insights on sustainable fashion at a panel discussion. Redress Alum, Claire Dartigues also ran a Fashion Sustainability Workshop, teaching participants basic cutting and sewing techniques to breathe new life into their old clothes.
Alumni Networking Event
Beyond their participation in the final rounds of the Redress Design Award, we continue to support our competition Alumni in moving the needle towards circular fashion practices.
Recently, we held another successful networking event for our talented Alumni designers from across the globe, connecting them with industry experts from fields including marketing, retail, sourcing, recycling, and more. This online event gave our 30+ participants the opportunity to exchange thoughts about the fashion industry and sustainability, and for the Alumni to get advice and knowledge to support their careers in sustainable fashion.
Our Redress Design Award Alumni Network is composed of semi-finalists and finalists from each cycle, who enjoy a range of post-competition support including opportunities for networking, education, and career development in sustainable fashion.
Congratulations to two of this year’s Alumni Prize winners: Nicole Kim Ang from the Philippines will receive an overlock sewing machine from JUKI, and Carina Roca from Hong Kong has won a one-year local membership at Soho House Hong Kong.
