Discussing Hot Topics at Fashion Summit HK

Do emerging fashion professionals have the skills for a sustainable industry today?

Redress has been exploring this pertinent question and more at Fashion Summit Hong Kong’s “Designers’ Sharing: Our Sustainable Fashion Journey”, an afternoon of talks, networking, and a panel discussion focusing on sustainable fashion on 15 November 2022. 

Throughout the summit, fashion design professionals were encouraged to take responsibility for the sustainability of their brands. For design professionals to reduce waste, summit speakers shared, they need to understand where the opportunities in their supply chain are, from choosing the right fabrics to allowing others to shine in their area, so that collectively more waste can be reduced. And with consumers expecting more than just a product, designers have the opportunity to do more by sharing knowledge, visibility, story, and services, all of which can serve to increase the longevity of garments.

Redress Design Award alumna Chan Meiyan spoke at the panel alongside an esteemed selection of experts including Marianne Mclean-Atkins, Education Director, Redress; Greg Cole, Co-founder of dejaWOOO and éCLAIR Asia; and Dr. Chris Lo, Associate Professor, School of Fashion & Textiles, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; with the discussion moderated by Laura Westbrook, Journalist at the South China Morning Post.

In addition to the panel, other sessions at the summit saw designers share their sustainable fashion journeys, with insights from respected local industry leaders on topics such as consumer perceptions and design decisions.

This Fashion Summit HK event is presented with Create Hong Kong as the lead sponsor, Redress as co-organiser alongside the Hong Kong Clothing Industry Training Authority, the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA), Sustainable Fashion Business Consortium (SFBC), The Mills Fabrica, and WWF Hong Kong.

Leading Redress as a Woman in Fashion

Coming up next, our Executive Director at Redress, Nissa Cornish, will be sharing at a panel hosted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CanCham) in Hong Kong on 6 December from 6:30–8:30pm. Titled “Women in Fashion and their Environmental Impact”, this event will explore the full cycle of the pre-loved fashion movement.

Nissa is joining entrepreneurial women in the sustainable fashion community — Sarah Fung, Founder of HULA, a platform for pre-owned luxury womenswear; and Sarah Garner, Founder of Retykle, an online platform for pre-loved children’s and maternity items; with the conversation moderated by Elizabeth L Thomson, Chairwoman of the Amber Foundation.
