The role of digital in sustainability was a key theme explored across the Redress Design Award 2021. Our educational activities explored the potential of digital technology to reduce waste in fashion and our 10 finalists created digital designs which were showcased on state of the art virtual models alongside their physical collections on the Grand Final Fashion Show runway; and in Redress’ first ever virtual exhibition.
Responding to the design brief to embrace circular design principles and transform textile waste via zero-waste, upcycling and/or reconstruction, the competition drew over 500 applications from 58 regions across the globe. Hailing from the worlds of retail, design, manufacturing and communications, our panels of judges were tasked with shortlisting this pool of talent to the 30 semi-finalists, and the final 10. These top talents developed their 5-piece collections to showcase to the exclusive in-person Grand Final audience of 300 industry elites, influencers and VIPs, and additional 2,000 guests who joined via livestream, to vie for exclusive prizes.
Redress’ education programme, spanning across the competition cycle, reached 6,800 via our lecture series; saw over 19,700 visits to our open access LEARN platform and 1,000 participants to our Redress Design Award Pathway Course.
During the Redress Design Award Grand Final Week in September, the finalists participated in immersive challenges with key industry partners who share our vision, to extend their knowledge and experience in circularity and sustainability for fashion. The ‘icebreaker® Move to Natural Challenge’, held in partnership with VF Corporation, tasked the finalists to design a solution for a 100% natural fibre hoodie from sheep to shirt with icebreaker team experts on hand to guide their process. In partnership with Browzwear and TAL Apparel, the ‘Digital Zero-Waste Challenge’ tasked the designers to work with digital design and sampling, both captured in our Frontline Fashion series.
