The 10th anniversary cycle of the Redress Design Award attracted applications from 46 countries and regions around the globe from emerging designers transforming a wide range of textile waste into collections, with 30 shortlisted as semi finalists, and a final 10 selected by expert judges. This year’s candidates performed outstandingly across all activities, having to contend with the additional factor of COVID-19 as they competed from their homes around the globe and blew us away with their innovation, sustainable techniques and determination. In the two weeks leading up to the live Grand Final, the finalists, hailing from 10 regions, successfully completed a series of virtual design and business challenges, which focused on real life sustainability business cases with a spotlight on Covid-19 impacted waste, supported by VF Corporation and TAL Group. The ‘Digital Up-cycling Challenge’ saw the finalists using Browzwear digital design and sampling software to create up-cycled concepts to turn TAL’s Covid-19-impacted deadstock garment waste into new products for retail. The ‘Made for Change Timberland Challenge’ saw the finalists develop sustainable and scalable business concepts, focusing on responsible design and re-manufacturing fabric deadstock.
The digital Grand Final took place on 3rd September, with over 10,000 viewing the show online. Menswear designer Le Ngoc Ha Thu from Vietnam and womenswear designer Juliana Garcia Bello of Argentina won significant sustainable design collaboration prizes with global leaders, VF Corporation’s Timberland and award-winning upcycled brand, The R Collective respectively.
To mark Redress’ decade of impact, the competition also celebrated the Redress Design Award Alumni achievements, with All Stars. The All Star accolate was awarded to seven alumni including Pat Guzik (Poland) who received a retail partnership for her brand with sustainable marketplace, Staiy, and all seven featured in a significant showcase at Galeries Lafayette Shanghai gaining brand promotion within China’s fast-growing fashion market.
