The first truly global edition in its 8 year history, the 2018 competition cycle reached far and wide with a record-breaking number of applications received from 55 countries, from designers applying fashion’s waste to their collections through creative approaches. Our judges shortlisted 30 semi-finalists and then selected the final 11 who developed 5 piece collections using their various different waste streams together with one or more of the different techniques of zero-waste, up-cycling and reconstruction. The educational programme engaged with over 900 emerging designers in a series of lectures and workshops and a further 5,000 others via our LEARN platform, on which a new guide on fibres was added.

The cycle culminated in the Grand Final Fashion Show - the biggest in the competition’s history, which took place at HKTDC’s fashion week CENTRESTAGE on 6 September with a 1,000 strong international fashion audience and an additional 2,000 joining via livestream. Among the multiple prizes awarded through the cycle was the opportunity to design a sustainable collection for up-cycled brand The R Collective; a tailored mentorship with distinguished sustainable designer Orsola de Castro; the opportunity to dress Hong Kong supermodel Cara G at the upcoming Frontline Fashion 3 launch; and to use the co-creative working space and technical appliances at azalvo. The newly opened Mercedes me Store, Hong Kong was the first stop of a travelling exhibition featuring select pieces from our finalists’ collections.
